Tampa development waterstreet is truly an amazing development coming to Tampa! Many things about this development are extremely unique and a first of its kind. While I (Alex Hoffman E.I.) was touring the USF Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute with the local Tampa AIA. The cooling facility was brought up. I believe that the significance of this new cooling facility is being under appreciated. This is huge and here is why! Instead of having A/C mechanical units taking up the whole roof top of each and every new high rise like standard buildings. This new Tampa development has done some incredible mechanical engineering to incorporate one facility that provides heating and cooling to many buildings at the new water street district. This is such a significant break through since all these buildings are owned by the same development group which allow for the off site facility.Advantages to this centralized heating and cooling system results in lower electrical costs and reduced HVAC noise and freed up valuable roof top real estate that can be used for a roof top deck occupancy allowing people to see the beautiful vistas of Tampa’s down town skyline and water front! This system also affects not just the mechanical engineering design but also the structural engineering design since now the buildings no longer requires roof top structural reinforcement to carry the heavy roof top Mechanical units.
How can similar methods be professionally engineered into your building?
Here at Advanced Engineering Consultants we are always looking at new innovative construction methods and products on the market. We have been pushing for VRF ( Variable refrigerant flow ) heating and cooling systems to be implemented into new construction and renovations on our commercial and residential design projects. Using a VRF system eliminates the majority of air ducts and provides cleaner more comfortable air, higher energy efficiency (meaning more money saved per month), quieter operation, sleeker design with ceiling cassettes and newest technology. If you would like to know more about having us implement these mechanical engineered systems designed into your single family home, multi-family development, commercial or industrial building please don’t hesitate to personally call me know at (813) 444-7037 to know how we can help! Don’t forget to also ask about geothermal heat pumps.

“Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and Hillsborough County Commissioner Pat Kemp celebrated the opening of Water Street Tampa District Cooling, a 12,500-square-foot facility that will cool the neighborhood’s buildings via chilled water circulated through 1.7 miles of underground, insulated steel pipes.
Built by Tampa Bay Trane and Creative Contractors, the plant has been touted as an efficient, centralized and environmentally sustainable way to cool the dozens of buildings that will eventually be part of the 56-acre Water Street Tampa.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, SPP Executive Vice President Charlie Rollins noted that its output would be 30-40% more efficient than traditional air-conditioning units. It will also free up rooftop space for amenities including pools, bars and even dog-walking areas. And with no individual chillers running, Water Street’s buildings will be much less noisy.” – Business Observer

“As the first anticipated WELL-certified neighborhood in the world, the new district cooling plant contributes to the WELL Community Standard requirements by creating resilient neighborhood infrastructure and reducing noise levels throughout the community.” -Patch
